The DSTC is designed to teach qualified surgeons and advanced surgical trainees strategic thinking and decision-making in the management of the severely injured patients and provide them with practical surgical skills to manage major organ injuries.
It is an intensive 3-day course comprising lectures, interactive case discussions and laboratory based surgical skills training.The course provides participants with a stimulating opportunity to focus on:
- surgical decision making in complex scenarios
- operative technique in critically ill trauma patients
- hands on practical experience working with experience national and international instructors
- insight into difficult trauma situations, especially in:
- handling major thoracic, cardiac and abdominal injuries
- learned techniques of haemorrhage control.
The DSTC course is recommended by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (external site) for all consultant surgeons and final year trainees.In conjunction with many DSTC courses the Definitive Perioperative Nurses Trauma Care Course (DPNTC) and Definitive Anaesthetic Trauma Care Course (DATC) where the surgeons and nurses will work together with the Anaesthetists as part of a trauma team.
