Skills Workshop for Anaesthetic Novices (SWAN)

The SWAN Course is a one-day course for junior doctors beginning their training in anaesthesia.
The day is practical in focus. Participants work in small groups, supported by a high ratio of senior anaesthetic faculty, progressing through a series of skills stations and simulation scenarios based on the procedures and situations encountered in the early months of anaesthetic practice.

The SWAN Course provides supervised, hands-on experience with the relevant equipment and techniques, allowing participants to develop familiarity and confidence before applying them in clinical practice.

Topics Include:

  • Airway Management including emergency techniques
  • Neuraxial Anaesthesia
  • Cardiac emergencies
  • Management of anaesthetic emergencies through simulations
  • Discussion of anaesthetic application process

By the end of the course, we hope you will have gained familiarity with the wide range of skills required to succeed as an Anaesthetic Trainee.
